Crafting the Perfect Prompt: A 6-Step Guide for AI Solopreneurs
As an AI solopreneur, getting the most out of ChatGPT requires thoughtfully engineered prompts. Simply typing any request won’t deliver tailored, accurate responses for your solo venture.
In this comprehensive guide, I’ll walk you through the exact 6-step prompt writing process I use with examples from my AI business. Follow these prompts best practices to boost ChatGPT’s value in automating tasks and generating content.
Step 1: Understand ChatGPT’s Limits
It’s important to remember ChatGPT lacks real-world knowledge despite its intelligence. Approach it like a junior team member who requires detailed direction and mentoring, not as an omniscient expert.
Don’t make broad assumptions about ChatGPT’s abilities to intuit what you need. Instead, lay the groundwork in your prompt to set it up for success.
Step 2: Provide Background Context
Give ChatGPT the required context it needs to craft relevant responses within your specific business domain.
Explain any industry lingo, terminology, acronyms the AI should know. Outline your company and products/services in simple terms.
For example, my prompt for writing cold emails starts:
“You are an AI assistant for my digital marketing agency that specializes in SEO services for technology startups…”
Step 3: Specify Exactly What You Need
Include clear directives for what you want ChatGPT to do — “write a summary”, “create a blog post”, “draft social media posts”.
Keep prompts concise, under 50 words. And give direct instructions like “examine this data and provide insights” rather than just “help analyze this.”
Step 4: Provide Examples
Share examples of ideal responses or creative work to further guide ChatGPT based on tangible models.
When asking to generate landing page copy, I included two sample paragraphs from high-converting pages I admire.
Step 5: Define Tone, Format, Length
Specify the exact tone you need — formal, casual, funny? What about format — bullet points, images, headers?
And give length constraints, like “Summarize in 2–3 sentences” or “Write 25–50 words for the social media caption.”
Step 6: Refine and Iterate
Review the output critically. If it misses the mark, refine the original prompt by incorporating more constraints and examples.
It often takes a few iterations of prompt > output > refine cycle to nail the parameters for getting exactly what you want from ChatGPT.
Putting in the work to engineer focused, detailed prompts directly tied to your solo business goals will ensure ChatGPT delivers its best results as your AI assistant.
An Example Prompt
Here is a prompt I give for an ebook content outline:
“You are an AI assistant for my content marketing agency. Write a detailed chapter outline for an ebook on trends in the blockchain industry aimed at senior executives. Include 5–7 chapters with 2–3 section headings per chapter. Make the topics focused specifically on business applications of blockchain — nothing technical. Write concise 2–3 word section headings. Keep language formal.”
